Measuring the occurrence of a behavior helps us understand how often it happens over a certain period of time. There are different ways to measure how frequently a behavior occurs. Here are some of the main methods:
![]() Frequency *What It Measures: The number of times a behavior occurs during a specific period. *When to Use: For behaviors that have clear start and end points. Examples: -The student got up to use the bathroom 6 times in one hour. -You checked Instagram 20 times in one day. | ![]() Rate/Index *What It Measures: The number of times a behavior occurs per unit of time. *When to Use: To measure how often a behavior occurs within a specific time frame. Examples: -The skater can do 20 tricks in one minute. -It takes you 30 minutes to drink a liter of water. | ![]() Percentage *What It Measures: The proportion of a value in relation to a total of 100. It is expressed as a number between 0 and 100, where 0 represents 0% and 100 represents 100%. *When to Use: To measure the proportion of a behavior within a total amount. Examples: -42% of the time you spend on your cell phone is spent on social media. -The child is focused on his reading 80% of the time. |
